“We do not remember days, we remember moments.” I’ve had too may moments to count. I’ve met and shot too many of my heroes. Spent time with some of the coolest people on earth. Lucky enough to have more than a few special moments. These are special moments that I will never forget and will always be grateful for. Today’s GREAT Moment…
Martini Ranch | 1988
Its not a real ranch, its Martini Ranch! A band featuring Andrew Todd & Bill Paxton. They had one album out in 1988 and it featured a single called Reach. You can see it on YouTube anytime. It was directed by James Camron and had a ton of Bill’s friends. Here’s a few that I remember… Kathryn Bigelow, Lance Henriksen, Paul Reiser, Jenette Goldstein, Judge Reinhold, Brian Thompson, Adrian Pasdar, Bud Cort and Michael Biehn. Plus so many more.
We shot for 3 days that I remember out at a desert location. The idea of the video was a apocalyptic western. I have to say this was the video shoot that gave me the directing bug. Watching James work is fucking brilliant. He can do everyone’s job on a set. He was crazy in all the right ways. Bill really made the shoot fun. I can only imagine what it must have been like on Aliens or Near Dark.
Bill and Andrew gave me free reign and let me shoot what ever I wanted. I shot a ton of portraits, a little BTS and had too much fun. Everyone on the crew was amazing and the actors were so into it. It was such a team effort and everyone gave everything they could to the video. I really think I learned more from this video than any other video I worked on.
So many great moments at the shoot, but the one that was the best and stood out was at the end. I made a nice box of 8×10 prints and gave it to James Cameron as a thank you. I was told he loved it and I heard years later that he still had it. Like WOW!
PS. Also from this shoot I ended up shooting Adrian, Lance and Michael for fun. Also I shot Michael Biehn’s wedding for him. Also did the publicity shoot for the band. Also went to a screening of Near Dark with Bill, Adrien and James. Crazy!
