Tenacious D | Time Out Magazine | 08.27.01

This was my one and only shoot for New York’s Time Out Magazine—and it was a great one on every level.  Shooting Kyle Gass and Jack Black as Tenacious D was a real privilege. I had photographed Jack before, but this was my first time meeting Kyle. We set up at Smashbox Studios in Culver City.

I wanted to play with a “magician” theme, so I rented a classic sawing-in-half illusion from the legendary magician Mark Wilson. For the assistant, I called in my good friend Aria Giovanni—dressed her in a sassy stage outfit and let the magic happen.  Jack and Kyle loved it, we got a few setups done, and the magazine was thrilled with the results.

What stood out most was Jack’s energy in front of the camera.  Every time I’ve photographed him, he’s been easy, fun, and a total team player.  And of course—hilarious.  He always makes me look good.
