YO! Grunge this. Grunge that.  Grunge, grunge, grunge.  But what is grunge?  A couple of weeks ago I was shooting with some young musician friends, and we got into a conversation about Seattle, grunge, and the bands that defined the era.  Of course, they weren’t there.  I was… kind of there.  I was lucky enough to photograph many of those bands as they were coming up, and it was an incredible time for music.

So here’s my question… Who are your favorite grunge bands?  Here are my Top 10…

  1. Mudhoney – The best of the best.  The only true grunge band for me.  They invented it.
  2. Nirvana – Duh.  Of course Nirvana.  I’m not stupid.
  3. Soundgarden – Grunge cuz they lived in the hood of Seattle, but I think they had more rock/metal in them.
  4. The Melvins – One my favs!  Shot them twice!
  5. The Gits – Loved everything they did and released.
  6. Bikini Kill – Fuck yes!  Saw them at the OK Hotel in 1991 and blew me away!  I still have my cassette I bought from the show.
  7. 7 Year Bitch – My fav or favs!  They were great live!!!
  8. Alice in Chains – My #1 fav band out of Seattle at that time.
  9. Pearl Jam – Not sure they are really grunge, but I will include them so I don’t get yelled at.
  10. Screaming Trees – Loved them big time.  I directed 2 music videos for them and shot them a couple times.  Loved Mark!!
