Lucy Pearl | Vibe Magazine | 06.10.00
This was another fun shoot for VIBE magazine. I loved working with VIBE and their photo editor George Pitts. He was such a legend. He asked me to shoot the band Lucy Pearl and told me I wouldn’t have too much time. I was excited to see Raphael Saadiq again cuz I shot him with Tony Toni Tone. Meeting the amazing Dawn Robinson from En Vogue and the brilliant Ali Shaheed Muhammad from Tribe Called Quest made the shoot that much better!
I booked the location Duke’s Cafe. A super fun diner next to The Whiskey on Sunset Blvd. We shot inside for most of the shoot, Super casual and easy. Also the diner made some tasty food for everyone. The band was super cool. Dawn was sweeter than sweet. After we shot inside I took the band outside. We walked across the street and I had them sit at the bus stop. I laugh thinking about these crazy ideas of mine. Seriously… bus stop! I’m surprised they didn’t just leave.
Again, the end results were amazing and George was happy. That’s all that matters in the end. One of the things I loved shooting for VIBE was the BIG tear sheets! The magazine was a large format magazine. The tear sheets were amazing and looked great in my portfolios.
