Is there such thing as an editorial photographer? Do magazines really matter? What is considered editorial today? What is an editorial shoot? Here I go again… back in the day… shooting for magazines was how we got our name out there and usually had creative control. The pay wasn’t much, but it was a big deal to shoot for the bigger magazines. Of course shooting the cover was a HUGE deal.
Does this still exist? Does it even matter? It’s still around, but I don’t think it carries the weight like it used to. I think it’s nice, but since magazines are not a big deal, then shooting for them is not a big deal. Truth be told I love shooting for them and 99% of the time I do not even get paid. I do it cuz I love it! I love seeing my photos in print and that’s all that matters to me.
I do miss the good old days getting a call from SPIN, Rolling Stone, Stuff, Movieline, Premiere, Esquire, Elle Decor, Maxim, Creem, Musician and so many others. It was always fun and a challenge to do these shoots. Some were my favorite shoots of all time and some opened doors too many other bigger shoots. I’m not sure editorial shoots do this today. Not sure. What do you think?
