Way back in the day. Early 70’s I think. I was not a big fan of costumes and dressing up for Halloween. Just not my thing. BUT I loved the free candy and so I always needed to come up with some costume. For years my go to costume was to put a camera around my neck and tell everyone I was Richard Avedon. You can imagine, most of my friends said… WHO? When I got to a door and screamed “trick or treat”, they always looked at me and shook their heads. Then asked are you a photojournalist? I would look back intently and say NO fucking way. I’m Richard Avedon!! Then I would hear… WHO?
I think the mistake I made was wearing a Minolta SRT101 camera around my neck and NOT a Hasselblad. I think that confused everyone. I know I was young and I knew my neighbors would not know who Avedon was, but I did. That’s all that mattered and I got me FREE candy!! What else matters?
