Is there really a music business? Is there a business for music? If so who is making the money? Who’s running the business? Cuz it’s not the musicians. It’s NOT me. Back in the day there was money to be made in the music business for photographers, directors & creatives. Album cover shoots, publicity shoots, music videos, merchandise and so much more. Real budgets and real money! A musician/band could sell a million records, tour the world and make millions. Now I just don’t see it and the future looks even worse.
I miss the days when I would get the call from my agent telling me Epic Records called or Warner Brother Records called or A&M Records would call with a BIG shoot with BIG budget! I understood the budgets, the recoupable money and the reality of the bands money. BUT they still spent money to make money. Not so much anymore. Now they don’t have the money and what they do have the label keeps it for themselves.
The business of music and photography has changed a lot in my time. I’m happy I had the “good old days”. So grateful for the past, but I just worry about the future for my musician & photographer friends. I hope they can make a living doing what they love. Hang in there and do the work.
