Fuel | Epic Records | 05.08.01

This shoot with Fuel was for Epic Records publicity, and we did it at one of my favorite spots back then—the legendary, run-down Ambassador Hotel.  I shot there a lot before it was finally torn down.  The place carried heavy history—it was the site where Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated, and there was even an “X” on the kitchen floor marking the spot where he was shot.  Just surreal.

The session itself was smooth—the band was easygoing and into it.  One of the great things about shooting at the Ambassador Hotel was having full access to everything: the rooms, the grounds, the exteriors—anything we wanted.  Sometimes we’d even paint and dress up a room just for a shoot.  Fuel loved it, especially the history and the wild stories the manager would share with us.

The photos ended up everywhere—magazines, covers, and all kinds of publicity for their album Something Like Human.  Back in those days, most artists got two sessions: one for the album cover and one for publicity.  If the album took off, they might get another.  And when Fuel’s record hit, those photos were everywhere.
